Play Ball! How Spring Training Strategies Can Improve Your Work Game

It’s a big day for baseball fans - pitchers and catchers are reporting to spring training, marking the beginning of the season and reminding us that spring is just around the corner.

Every year baseball players go through a ritual of preparation full of drills, conditioning, and practice games. It doesn’t matter whether you’re the star of the team or a young prospect trying to make it, spring training is a time of opportunity and excitement about the possibilities for the season to come.

For the rest of us, we don’t have the ritual of spring training every year. We often get caught up in the day-to-day and lose sight of the opportunities and excitement in our work. We take our training for granted, and stop challenging ourselves to grow.  This year, as the baseball season gets underway, think about what a spring training could look like for you:

  • Who can help coach you, help you see what you’re missing that might be holding you back?
  • What skills need to be sharpened or developed, how can you make space to learn, practice, and hone them?
  • In what areas do you need more conditioning, how can you challenge yourself to build stamina for the season ahead, and to be prepared for the extra innings that might come?
  • How can you integrate practice games into your workflow that give you a chance to try something new and to see what you’re capable of in a safe, supportive environment?

Each year spring training brings renewed hope, a chance for a new, fresh start. In whatever work you do, it’s time to play ball!
